About

Whelan Refining is a family run waste oil re-refinery based in Stoke-On-Trent. The first, and to date, the only one of its kind operating in the United Kingdom. We produce high quality base oils from used lubricating oils recovered from around the country. Operational since 2007, we have recycled over 500,000 tonnes of waste oil collected from U.K garages.

Re-Refining

There are around 200,000 tonnes of waste lubricating oils collected in the U.K each year. This represents one of the most crucial environmental and waste management challenges. The majority of waste oil in the U.K is still burned as a heavily polluting fuel. We are working hard to put a stop to that and ensure that as much is put back to good use as possible.

Furthermore, at a time when it is becoming increasingly necessary to minimise the production of virgin oil products, Whelan Refining are recycling and recovering the single most valuable element obtainable from the Crude Oil “barrel” Base Oil, the base for all lubricants, is nearly twice as valuable as Petrol or Diesel and it is scarce – it is only 1% of a crude oil refinery’s output and it will be required long after the world moves away from those fuels. It is therefore essential that it is recycled.

How is this done?

01.

When the nation's drivers take their car for a service at a local garage, the sump is drained and filled with new oil. This oil is stored for collection by one of our trusted waste oil collectors.

02.

Upon collection, the oil is transported to Whelan Refining, where upon arrival it is tested for toxic elements such as metals, PCB's and other contaminants. Only the best are accepted.

03.

This waste oil is then re-refined through a process of high pressure, high temperature vacuum distillation. Producing clean, clear and bright distillates free of any contamination.

04.

This base oil is then sold back into the lubricants market both in the UK and further afield. Eventually finding its way back into the nation's cars, thus completing the circular economy.

Our Base Oils

Re-refining waste oil relies as much upon the quality of the feedstock as it does on the techniques used. What goes in, influences considerably what comes out. Over the last 15 years, the UK market has seen a dramatic shift to using sophisticated synthetic base oils. As such, here at Whelan Refining, we are producing a high quality Group I SN150 with attractive properties for lubricant manufacturing.
